Overview

Project dates: October - December 2020

Location: Portsmouth, UK

Length of project: 8 weeks

Despite the frustrations of lockdown, enthusiastic young dancers from around Portsmouth complete an exciting film documenting a creative exploration of the links between the 19th-century hornpipe dance steps, part of Portsmouth’s maritime heritage, and popular dance of the modern era.

“Step Your Way” funded by Reverberate (an initiative by English Heritage’s Shout Out Loud youth engagement programme). Led by Portsmouth based organisation Funk Format – Soul Rawkus, “Step Your Way” was selected to be one of only 14 projects from across the country to re-discover, re-imagine and re-create local heritage through creativity, and share their vision with their community.

Aimed at giving young people a new opportunity during Covid-19 and a creative way to avoid risks to their mental health during the pandemic, Step Your Way’s young participants (11-25) learnt about dance evolution from steps associated with sailors from the 1800s to the street dance styles of the modern era.

The video of their dance journey will premiere on the 17th January 2021 at 12 pm and can be viewed either below or on Funk Format’s Facebook Page.

This is a joint collaboration between Simon Harmer, Sasha Biloshisky and Funk Format Soul – Rawkus CIC.
